What to Do About Flagstone Gaps After Neighbor Fixed Their Fence?

Hey everyone! I have a bit of a concern regarding my flagstones in the backyard. They were beautifully done by the previous owner and were rock solid, with no movement at all. Recently, my neighbor decided to redo his backyard and replaced the fence posts because the old fence was leaning towards his yard. While I totally get that the fence needed some work, the problem is they moved the fence a bit towards his side, which has resulted in a gap between the flagstones and the newly positioned fence. This gap is about 1.5 inches wide in places, and I'm worried that if I just fill it with gravel, it won't stop the flagstones from shifting over time, especially with the freeze-thaw cycles we have here in Canada. I'm considering adding some wooden supports to hold everything together, but I'm not sure how to make it look good or if that's the best solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you’re up for some DIY, you might want to try using an extra flagstone and cutting it into strips to fill that gap. Just be careful, as having something jammed up against the fence can cause rot on the bottom of the fence boards over time.

Have you thought about putting landscape edging against the fence? You could then fill the gap between the edging and the flagstone with some nice river rocks to keep things in place. The edging wouldn’t need to be attached to the fence—just set it against it. I’ve used a product like this before, and it comes in several colors and is easy to work with!

Thanks for suggesting that! I'm definitely considering whether some kind of edging could work here. I’ll need to check the dimensions, but it seems promising!
