I found some little mice peeking at me when I turned my compost yesterday, and they quickly scurried away to my neighbor's garden. I'm concerned about a potential infestation but I also don't want to harm any creatures if I can avoid it. What are my best options for dealing with this situation?

I dealt with a similar issue a few years back. From what I read, mice might be drawn to a dry compost bin, which isn't ideal for composting anyway. I ended up giving mine a good soak—about two-thirds of a watering can full, poured slowly. That encouraged the mice to leave, and it helped balance the compost moisture. Just an FYI, I did have some mice showing up in the garage after that, though.

I appreciate the quick insight! It's nice to know they left toward a neighbor's yard. I'm hoping if I make it uncomfortable for them, they'll stay away. Seems like there's a wildlife corridor back there since we often see foxes. As for my garage, I've noticed some signs of gnawing but no major issues—fingers crossed!
