What to Do with a Broken Portable Power Station?

I bought a portable power station, but it turns out it's broken despite looking brand new. I was told it just needed charging, but after charging, everything from the info screen to the controls is dead. The flashlight function is stuck on and the buttons for the outputs don't work. Since it's second-hand, the manufacturer won't repair or exchange it. I'm wondering if there's anything inventive I can do with this thing besides having a really bright, uncontrollable flashlight? Can I salvage the batteries? Is it worth opening up to see if I can reset it or fix it? Any tips on avoiding electric shocks while tinkering would be great, too!

You definitely want to start by figuring out the make and model; it helps a ton. Not to put a damper on things, but based on your description, I wonder if there was some water damage. Also, you could try searching for your model on YouTube with the term 'teardown' to see if anyone else has had the same issues. If I were you, I'd crack it open, trace the wiring, and see if I can disconnect that pesky light. Then, check the main battery voltage. If you’re lucky, it might still accept a solar charge! If not, at least you’ll have a battery and charger to work with.

A lot of portable power stations have a modular design. If the battery is separate from the rest of the unit's components, you could end up just using it independently. Just a heads up, they often run on voltages higher than 24v, so keep that in mind. Your charging circuit might also be separate, which could still function on its own.

You might just need to wake up the battery, which could take a DC power supply. But without more details about the power station, it’s hard to say for sure. Once you do that, it should be easier to isolate the problem, especially since it appears the flashlight is always on. Just to be clear, you’ve got the Alpha ESS AP1000, right? That info could help others give more tailored advice.

Yeah, it’s the Alpha ESS AP1000. When I charged it for 1.5 hours using a DC supply, that flashlight turned on and lasted quite a while before draining. But the buttons to the outputs still won’t work, and I can’t turn off the light either. The display is completely dead.

That’s a bummer! It sounds like something’s faulty with the control board. You might want to check for any visible issues inside, like blown components. Good luck with it!
