Hey everyone! I'm looking to hire a landscape designer for my new home. I've got some ideas on how I want the space to look, but I need guidance on selecting plants and creating a cohesive design. If I hire a designer, will they expect me to buy all the plants from them and have them handle the installation? Or is it possible to just pay for the design and plans? Also, what should I expect in terms of costs? My yard is about a quarter of an acre, featuring a shrub bed in the front, some shrubs along the back fence, and a small cottage garden in the backyard. It shouldn't be a massive project. Thanks in advance for your insights!

When I offered landscape design services, my starting price was around $2,000, which would include three site visits, a scaled AutoCAD drawing, and a complete list of plants and materials. My experience was 20 years as a certified horticulturist. Just so you know, prices can vary: some landscape architects can start at around $4,000, while someone from a plant nursery could charge as low as $500. So it really depends on the level of expertise you want.
I reached out to three different designers when I was in your position. One was charging $5,000 for a plan that only she could implement, which felt ridiculous to me. I then tried a local nursery that offered a much lower rate, but after hearing feedback from my neighbor, I passed on them. Eventually, I hired a grad student who provided an excellent overhead map and a list of shrubs for just $300. It was a fantastic decision! If I were you, I'd consider finding someone still studying, as they often charge less but bring fresh ideas and creativity.
Sounds like you found a bargain! I bet he's increased his rates by now, haha! Great job on the drainage too!

I'd love to see this plant list you got, especially since I work in an urban garden right now, and deer aren't a problem for us. I'm planning to move back to the suburbs eventually!
