What tool should I buy next for my small workshop?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to figure out what my next tool purchase should be. I have a small garage with just basic tools upfront: a miter saw, drill, hammer, sander, jigsaw, and a workbench. I can't fit any big tools like a table saw, and those don't really fit my budget right now either since we won't be living here long term. I've been told that making boxes could help me step up my woodworking game, and I'm hoping to build a desk and some kind of storage unit. I want to avoid using hand tools for tasks like dovetails or mortises, so I'm considering a pocket hole jig, dowel jig, or a router. I'd like to keep my budget under $200. What do you think I should get?

I’d skip the dowel jig for now. Trust me; it’s not really worth it at your current stage. A circular saw could be your best bet since it’ll help you make long, straight cuts, which is essential for many projects. Those cuts are foundational for almost everything you'll do!

I've got a couple of dowel jigs just sitting in a drawer too. What a mistake buying those!

A circular saw and a router would be awesome choices! You can create a lot of projects with just those two. While table saws are great, you can replicate some of their functions with a straight edge guide and some DIY jigs. Routers are super versatile too, useful in joinery and more!

I wish I’d known about track saws when I bought my table saw! They’re fantastic for tight spaces and quick, clean cuts. A track saw makes breaking down sheets a breeze. There's even affordable options like the WEN track saw that do a great job!

If space is an issue, then maybe look into a track saw if you can swing it. They're great for making straight cuts without needing a massive setup. Of course, you could also just go for a circular saw and purchase some clamps for a guide. Don’t forget about pocket hole jigs and routers for versatility!
