What tool should I gift my friend who made me a mud bench?

Hey everyone! A friend of mine recently crafted a mud bench for me, and I want to show my appreciation by gifting him a tool. He mentioned that the combination square is one of his most-used tools, and he thinks Starrett is the best brand for it. I found what looks like the smaller version he owns online, but his is a bit rusted. I'm considering replacing it with a new or larger one. Can you give me advice on what specific model I should search for, especially since I've seen a wide range in prices from $100 to $700? Also, if there are any other tools that you think he might love but wouldn't splurge on himself, I'd love to hear your suggestions!

You could also think about a Festool domino if you want to get him something a little more premium. If he’s into woodworking, he’d definitely appreciate that!

Another idea is to find out where he gets most of his wood from and get a gift certificate from there. Many places sell both wood and tools, giving him flexibility for either a new project or tool!

Honestly, a gift card to Lee Valley could be your best bet. It lets him pick exactly what he wants without the pressure of choosing a specific tool. If you want to make it personal, you could print a photo of the combination square and attach it to the gift card, saying you wanted to get that for him but didn’t want to risk getting the wrong one. That way, it still feels thoughtful!

Thanks for the suggestion! Is Lee Valley a good place for woodworking supplies, or should I consider another store? He's not a fan of Amazon, so that's off the table.
