What Tools and Techniques Help Manage Steep Hillsides in Your Yard?

I have a house on a significant slope, with my backyard dropping about 30-40 feet from the back door to the property line. I've been tackling this challenge by working with the landscape rather than against it—I've even built some terraced garden beds! However, I find that a lot of tasks become more complicated due to the slope. For instance, leveling anything takes a lot of extra time with digging and measuring, and wheelbarrows get a bit dicey when they are filled too much. I'm looking for some helpful tools or tricks to make managing my hillside a bit easier. I'm thinking about getting a tamper for leveling, but what else should I consider?

I agree, building some paths is crucial, especially if you're hauling materials or using a wheelbarrow. If the landscape is really steep, hiring someone with a bobcat to carve out those paths could save you a lot of back pain down the line. And carrying tools up and down that hill can be a workout! I use a firewood carrier, which is just a heavy cloth sling. It makes transporting tools and materials a lot safer and easier on a slope.

It sounds like using drip irrigation could really benefit your watering strategy! It helps water soak into the soil without running off, which is key on a slope. Also, consider planting densely—you'll help with erosion that way. Plus, creating defined paths will make it easier for you to move around without having to deal with the steep grade all the time.

You might want to look into getting or leasing a utility golf cart. It can make transporting tools and supplies up and down that hill way easier—no more heavy lifting! It's a fun option that could save you a ton of energy, especially with all those DIY projects you have in mind.
