I recently bought three solid core doors, and they're a bit too wide for my 30" opening—actually measuring around 29.75". I'm looking to trim them down to fit better. I have two main questions: First, what tools do I need for trimming these doors? Should I use a track saw, circular saw, or an electric planer? I'm hoping to find the cheapest option. Secondly, when trimming 1/4", is it better to remove it from the hinge side only, or split it evenly with 1/8" from both sides? I'm a bit concerned about the handle cutouts if I take from the lock side.

Before you start cutting, make sure those doors actually need to be trimmed! Sometimes, what’s labeled as a 30" door can fit because they’re nominal sizes. If you do need to cut, I'd recommend using a track saw or table saw for the cleanest cut. If you're looking to adjust, I'd say go for trimming the hinge side. It'll be less noticeable and helps you avoid the hassle of reworking the doorknob area.
If you're wary about buying tools, remember you can rent! Just check nearby stores—although I did run into some issues finding track saws for rent, so you might want to get a circular or table saw instead. Also, putting tape on your cut line can help prevent any splintering when you saw!
A circular saw with a straightedge clamp is your best bet! They’ve got some great clamps like the Emerson Tool or Pro Grip which are really handy for cutting large sheets. As for removing the wood, definitely trim from the hinge side; it’s easier to adjust those cuts than redoing the doorknob hole.
