What Tools Should I Get for Building a Walnut Bed Frame?

I'm planning to build a sturdy platform bed frame using walnut for my next project. Previously, I've only worked with softwoods and have typically used dimensional lumber or sheets that I've cut down with a circular saw. Currently, I own a circular saw with a Kreg rip-cut, a Skil 10" miter saw (which is nice but can be a bit inaccurate if not set up perfectly), and the usual drills and jigsaws. I can also borrow a router from a friend.

Given that I'm limited by both budget and space, I'm looking for advice on what tools would be most beneficial for me to invest in next. I'm wary of large tools since I can't keep them set up all the time. My considerations include:

- Dewalt DWE7491 jobsite saw (but I'm a bit intimidated by table saws and considering spending more for a SawStop)
- Grizzly G0959 jointer/planer (seems like it might be overkill)
- Another type of planer if Grizzly is too much
- Kreg accu-cut saw track

I don't have a mentor to guide me, and I'm still learning about tools, including just discovering what a jointer does and its potential benefits. Any suggestions for tools I should consider or resources for learning would be really appreciated!

I'd recommend waiting until you have a specific project in mind that would really benefit from one particular tool; that way, your purchase feels justified. Building this bed frame is a great start!

It's worth noting that a jointer is pretty much useless without a planer to go with it. If you're on a tight budget, I'd suggest holding off on that. A table saw, however, is super useful. If you're looking at spending around $500 on the Dewalt jobsite saw, I’d actually recommend checking out the Skil table saw and the Bosch 1617 combo kit router with plunge base. You’d get two quality tools at a similar price range!

I appreciate the advice! I’m really tight on space, so maybe I’ll hold off on the jointer for now. The Grizzly combo sounds cool but might take up too much room.

I'm with you on the table saw - it's probably the single most used tool in my workshop. While I could technically build a bed frame without it, it would be a major hassle! I have the DeWalt jobsite saw and the Grizzly cabinet saw. Highly recommend the DeWalt, just remember it can be a bit scary without an outfeed table for longer pieces. I made my own setup that really helps with stability while cutting! Good luck with your project, and have fun learning!
