What tropical plant should I get after my Majesty Palm died?

I had a Majesty Palm that unfortunately didn't survive because it was too hard to take care of and I couldn't deal with the spider mite problem. My 6-year-old son is really upset about it, and I promised him we'd get a new plant. I already have a Dracaena that's thriving, so I'd prefer something other than that. Here are my preferences:

- I'd like a tropical plant.
- I plan to move it outside during the summer, so it should be able to handle the elements.
- It needs to be easy to maintain and not prone to spider mites.
- I'm looking for a larger plant.
- Sunlight isn't an issue because I have grow lights for winter.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

To steer clear of another pest issue, it might be better to keep the new plant indoors all year. Moving it outside tends to invite more pests since they get exposed to various critters. Since you’re looking for a taller plant, Golden Pothos or Baltic Blue Pothos on a moss pole could be great options. They grow upward and can help to create a nice dense foliage that’s not very appealing to spider mites.

If you want something that’s basic yet would make your kid happy, consider getting a Monstera, Pothos varieties, or a snake plant. They’re all pretty manageable and should fit your tropical preference!

A rubber tree could be a solid choice! Just remember to acclimate it to outdoor light by starting in the shade for a week or two. I’ve been putting my plants outside in spring/summer for over 25 years and haven't had a pest issue. This rubber tree I’ve had for about 2 and a half years has thrived with consistent care. I kept it in a sunny spot during the day but protected it from harsh sun initially. Attached is a pic of how it’s doing!
