Hi everyone! I'm making bamboo fly rods and using silk thread for the guides. One issue I'm facing is keeping the silk's true color intact before varnishing. I've heard that shellac flakes can help with this, but I'm unsure about which type to choose. I've come across terms like 'waxed' and 'dewaxed' shellac, and I know there are different shades available too. I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with this or has any suggestions on what would work best. Thanks!

Definitely go for dewaxed ultrablonde shellac flakes. Mixing it with some 100% alcohol will let the shellac soak into the thread and seal it properly without any clumps. The dewaxed version helps ensure your next finish will stick well, unlike the waxed kind that can block adhesion.
For your purpose, I’d recommend using dewaxed ultrablonde shellac flakes. They’re great for color sealing without adding a finish. Just mix them with denatured alcohol—make sure it’s pure alcohol since rubbing alcohol won’t cut it. You might also find that Zinnser shellac works okay if you want something easier to get your hands on, just keep an eye on how it affects color.
Thanks a lot for the tip! This sounds like exactly what I need!
Have you thought about using epoxy instead? I remember my dad using it on his fly rods, and the wraps came out looking shiny and solid without changing the silk’s color. He had a wooden rod turning jig for that extra smooth finish.

I agree! Shellac.net has some awesome options too.
