What Type of Soil Should I Choose for Growing Fruits and Vegetables?

Hey everyone! I'm a first-time gardener and I'm heading to Home Depot to pick up some soil for my fruit and vegetable garden. I've heard from my neighbors to avoid Miracle-Gro if I want to grow without chemicals or bugs, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Any recommendations on organic or chemical-free soil options?

It's true that many bags of soil exposed to the elements can have some pests, like fungus gnats. To avoid this, try to buy soil that’s kept covered or indoors. Steer clear of Miracle-Gro if you're looking for something organic, as it contains synthetic fertilizers. If you're planting in pots, look for potting soil or container mix, and if it’s in raised beds, a blend specifically labeled for that purpose works best.

I actually get my soil from Lowes, but they may have similar options at Home Depot. I use Sta-Green Vegetable and Flower Garden Soil, and it worked great for my raised bed and container garden last year. I bought it in the smaller 1 cu. ft. bags since they are easier for me to handle. Here’s a link for reference: [Sta-Green Vegetable and Flower Garden Soil](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sta-Green-Vegetable-and-Flower-Garden-Soil/5014304477).

Your neighbors have a point, but bugs aren't always a bad sign! Instead of avoiding them, consider attracting beneficial insects. Try planting native flowers nearby to encourage a healthy ecosystem. If your current plants aren’t thriving, maybe consider diversifying your garden practices next time.
