What Type of Soil Should I Use for Grading Around My House?

I'm regrading around my house to prevent water from collecting near the foundation, and I'm wondering if there's a specific type of soil I should use. I'm also going to be digging 8-foot holes for deck footings; can I use the dirt from those holes for the grading, or do I need something different?

For your project, heavily clay-based soil is the way to go. Clay doesn’t let water penetrate easily, making it great for redirecting water away from your foundation. If the dirt you dig for your footings is clay, feel free to use that—it’ll be effective for your grading!

Wow, 8-foot footings? That's quite deep! Where are you located that requires that?
