I'm looking to start my carving journey and was wondering what types of wood are usually recommended for beginners. Any insights on the best options would be really helpful!

Basswood is definitely the go-to choice for beginners! It's light and fairly soft, making it easy to carve. Plus, the grain is pretty uniform, so you won’t have to deal with inconsistent textures like you might with pine. If you're just starting out, you’ll find it a pleasure to work with.

Totally agree, basswood is the best option! Try to find the whiter varieties if you can, as they carve really smoothly. And if you’re outside the US, lime wood is a solid alternative in Europe, and if you're in Asia, Jelutong is also worth considering!

Yeah, Jelutong is great if you have access to it! It’s soft and easy to shape, perfect for beginners too.
