I've had ducks for over a decade in a 10'x13' pen that was previously a pea-gravel driveway. To maintain it, I've been using straw and pine shavings for bedding, which I replace about once a year. Now that I've taken down the pen, I'm double-digging the area and mixing in compost, but there's a lot of duck droppings mixed with the straw, about 6 inches deep, plus the old driveway underneath. I'm looking for advice on what vegetables would thrive in this nutrient-rich but challenging soil. Ideally, I want something that will break up the gravel and can grow well in this composted environment. Should I plant immediately, or is it better to wait?

Asparagus could be a great option! It loves nutrient-rich soil, which fits your compost and duck poo perfectly. Plus, it has deep roots that can help break up that old pea gravel underneath. Just keep in mind that asparagus takes a few seasons to establish before you start harvesting, but once it's established, you'll get plenty of fresh spears for years!
I've never grown asparagus. Do you recommend that because it loves organic matter?
