What Wood Should I Use for Practicing Mortise and Tenon Joints?

I'm looking to practice making mortise and tenon joints, and I'm not sure what type of wood to use or where to buy it. Should I get a plank or flat boards? I'm a complete beginner, so any guidance on shape and where to purchase would be really helpful!

I recommend using poplar for practice. It's a softer hardwood, making it easier to work with than some others, and it’s generally cheaper too. In the U.S., poplar is pretty accessible at most lumber yards or home improvement stores. Just avoid pine for this type of work; it's not ideal for mortise and tenon joints.

But what should I actually look for when I go to the store?
