I need to trim a board, but the space is too tight for my jigsaw. What works for a small amount, and what would you use if the cut is longer or the board is still in place?
What would you use for a small cut where a jigsaw won’t fit?

If the piece can come off, a sharp plane is a neat way to shave a little from the end. A shooting board helps keep the cut square, but for a small piece you can also secure it in a vise, mark the line, and work carefully to it. A sharp blade matters, especially with softwood.

For a longer straight cut, a circular saw with a clamped guide can do most of the work if you have room to set it up. It may not reach the very back, so finish that short section by hand with a fine saw. If the board is fixed in place, make sure it is stable and the saw can travel safely before cutting.

An oscillating multi-tool can fit where a jigsaw cannot, though keeping a long cut straight with one takes patience. If a clean edge matters and there is space to guide it, a router can remove most of the material, with a hand saw for the final section. For painted trim, a sanding block may be enough for a tiny adjustment.

So it mostly comes down to whether I can remove the piece and how much room there is to guide a power tool. That helps narrow it down.
