What's a Fair Payment Schedule for Hiring a Contractor?

We're kicking off a big bathroom remodel and it's time to discuss payment with our contractor, who's also a friend. He mentioned he wants $2,000 upfront and another $2,000 before he starts framing the shower, which is part of a total $6,000 for the job that includes framing and tiling. We're thinking of giving him just $1,000 to start, and then another $1,000 to $2,000 once the tiles are ready to be installed. Does this sound fair, or should we consider a different payment schedule?

Definitely get everything in writing. Just because he’s a friend doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect yourself with a solid agreement. It can help avoid any awkwardness later.

FriendshipFirst: I learned that the hard way. If things go south, it can really put a strain on your relationship.

FollowThePlan: Exactly! Having clear written terms can save both of you from drama.

Check your contract first. If it doesn’t specify payment terms, that’s a red flag. It’s normal for contractors to ask for a deposit, usually about a third, and then a payment at various stages until completion.

CuriousDIYer: So a one-third, one-third, one-third split sounds good?

SecurePayments77: Exactly! That’s pretty standard and keeps things fair for both of you.

$6,000 seems super low for gutting, framing, and tiling a bathroom. Just make sure he’s clear about the materials—are those included in that price? You might want to ask more about what you're actually getting for that amount.

BudgetConscious: It's all about the details! We’re buying the materials ourselves, not included in the price.

ValueSeeker93: Good idea! Just ensure the quality is there, especially since costs are tight.
