What’s a Good Affordable Backsaw for Crosscutting?

I'm currently using a basic 12" backsaw from a box store, and while it's served me well so far, I'm ready to upgrade as I get more serious about my woodworking. I mostly need a decent backsaw for crosscutting, especially when working with a bench hook. My budget is around $50, but I'm open to looking at used options on places like eBay. Any recommendations?

If you're into sharpening, vintage backsaws like those made by Disston could be a solid choice. They’re often under $50 if you’re willing to search a bit. Just watch out for any bent plates; the handles on those old saws are super comfy and worth it!

I totally agree! I picked up a couple for around $30 each, and after a quick file sharpening, they work great! Plus, it's a fun skill to learn.

You might want to save a bit more. If you can stretch your budget to around $125-150, it really opens up your options for quality saws that won’t disappoint.

'Stretch your budget' seems to be the mantra for every major tool purchase, haha!

Have you considered looking for a used Veritas? They often go for around $70-90 new, but you might find one used for your budget. Keep an eye out for factory seconds sales from LV—they sell quickly but can be a great deal!

$70-90 is a bit more than the budget, but if you're paying a little extra, at least you get a warranty!
