What’s a Good Backsaw for a 5-Year-Old?

I'm looking for advice on finding a suitable backsaw for my 5-year-old son. I want something that's appropriately sized and easy for him to handle. While I've seen that gent saws are generally good, I think an upright handle would be better for him as he's just starting out. Any recommendations on sizes or brands that have worked for others?

Have you thought about something like the Veritas dovetail saw? It's a good choice for smaller hands and might help your child learn the basics without being too overwhelming.

Bad Axe used to make a great kids' backsaw! It might be worth checking out their designs. Here’s a link to a first look at it: [Bad Axe American Kid Backsaw](https://www.popularwoodworking.com/editors-blog/first-look-bad-axe-american-kid-backsaw/). It could be just what you're after!

I started my kid on a coping saw when he was around five, which was a lot easier for him to manage. We later moved to a short construction-grade hand saw. Backsaws can be a bit delicate and might frustrate younger kids who are still developing their motor skills.

Yeah, I think starting with something simpler like a coping saw is a great idea. Let's ease them into it!
