What’s a good small digging tool for yard work?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to do some dirt work in my yard and want to avoid doing it by hand. However, the job isn't big enough to justify renting a mini excavator. I'm dealing with about 2 yards of heavily compacted soil from a former pond that I need to move. Any suggestions for tools or machines that fit this in-between range? Thanks in advance!

You might want to try a tiller to break up the compacted soil. You'll still need to scoop it out, but it can save you some effort. If you have a pickax, that can really help pierce the ground too. Just remember to keep a wheelbarrow handy, and maybe lay down some plastic sheets to avoid making a mess on your lawn. Oh, and don't forget to compact the soil once it’s in place!

Thanks for the great tips! Yes, compacting is definitely on the list. I’ve got a pickax and a spade, but starting to feel that age creeping up on me—don’t want to do it all by hand anymore haha.

Honestly, 2 yards is a perfect size for a mini excavator rental. If you're trying to save cash, you could always enlist some neighborhood kids or friends with a few cold drinks and pizza—makes for a fun day and helps you get the job done!

Consider using an auger for your project. Power Planter has models that can fit a strong 20V drill and make digging much easier. You could also look into a power wheelbarrow—those can be a game changer for moving soil without breaking your back!
