Hey everyone! We had a fence installed about six months ago, and the builder didn't include staining. The quality of the work was great, and the price was reasonable. Now we want to stain the fence to protect it and extend its life, but the quotes I'm getting are shockingly high — like almost half of what the fence cost originally! I need some insights on a rough price range for staining a 200-foot by 6-foot fence using an oil semi-solid stain. I know costs vary, but I'd love to rule out any blatant rip-offs while I look for quotes. Thanks!

Honestly, you can save a ton by doing it yourself! A water-based stain from Home Depot and a $15 pump sprayer will do the trick. If you’ve got cedar wood, some people recommend letting it age naturally too, since a good sealant can keep it in shape without needing stain. Just remember that if you go with stain, choose a penetrating kind to avoid flaking later on. It’s also important to keep the fence dry and off the ground to prevent rot from setting in!
Also, if I can only stain my side of the fence, will that still help? Or is it pointless?
You could always find a teenager seeking some extra cash and suggest they stain the fence while learning karate! Just imagine: ‘Up, down, up, down’ while they work! Haha!
Hahaha, that’s a clever idea! Who wouldn't want a karate session while staining?

That sounds doable! What about just using a regular sealant instead? Is that effective?
