I'm helping my child and myself get started with some wood carving, and I've been reading a lot of FAQs already available. I think my child will use ANSI 5-rated gloves on both hands, which seems right to me. For myself, I plan to have an ANSI 5 glove on the hand holding the wood, but I'm unsure what to use on my knife hand. As a complete beginner, do you recommend a leather thumb guard or tape? Or is there a better option I should consider? Additionally, my child will be using a sharp blunt-tip knife, so I'm a bit worried about safety. Thanks for your help!

I wear gloves on both hands when I carve. Better to be safe, especially as a beginner! It's easy to get distracted, and even with gloves, accidents can happen.
Use what makes you feel safest while you’re practicing your techniques. If double-gloving feels right, go for it! When you gain more confidence, you can decide how to handle protection for your knife hand in the future.
As a fellow beginner, I wear ANSI 5 gloves on both hands while carving. It might seem excessive for the hand holding the knife, but until you get used to proper technique, it's wise to stay protected. Trust me—one moment of distraction can lead to a mistake! Just remember, it's all about playing it safe while you learn this new skill!
