What’s Causing a Maple Syrup Smell in My House?

Hey everyone! I'm in Virginia and I've been dealing with a weird issue in my home. There's this strong maple syrup smell coming from one of the upstairs rooms, but there's no food or anything that would explain it. After looking around online, I stumbled upon the possibility of an HVAC coolant leak since I have central air—not using any window units. Has anyone experienced something like this before? What do you think could be causing it, and how can I get it fixed?

I had a similar experience, and it turned out to be the new pink insulation I had installed. I ran some fans to air it out, and after about a week, the smell went away. If you've recently done any renovations or installation, that might be worth checking!

Could it be any fluorescent lights in that room? The ballast in those lights can give off a sweet smell when they're failing. Just a thought, but if you don't have fluorescent lights there, then it might be something else.

I know this might sound odd, but have you checked for bugs in the walls? Sometimes honeybees can make weird smells, especially if they have a nest nearby. If you’re noticing any bee activity outside, it might be worth investigating. You can try putting a cup up to the wall where the smell is strongest to listen for buzzing or check if the wall feels warmer than usual.
