What’s Causing a Rubber Smell in My House?

So I just woke up and noticed that my living room smells like rubber, and now the smell seems to be spreading throughout the house. I'm 19 and live with my mom, who didn't seem to be worried when I told her. She's out taking my grandma to the doctor right now. I checked the breaker and the water heater since both the dryer and washing machine are running, but didn't find anything unusual. I even took a whiff from a couple of outlets, but nada. I'm honestly a bit freaked out wondering if there's something dangerous going on! Any ideas on what might be causing this?

I know how you feel! I'd be worried too. Make sure to keep checking for any electrical problems, maybe a short somewhere? Hopefully, someone who knows more about this stuff can add some insight!

First thing, check what's in the dryer. Sometimes items can melt and cause funky smells! Also, if your house has central AC, make sure it’s not a burning fan belt in the air conditioning unit. That can definitely give off a rubbery smell too!

And don’t forget to check your mom's nightstand drawer! ? Just kidding, but seriously, make sure to look everywhere!

Haha, I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks for the tips!

It sounds like something electrical could be overheating and melting. I had a similar situation with a transformer for my security system that started to overheat. You really need to sniff around to track down the source!

Make a quick walk around the house and check for any obvious sources. Look at your electrical panel and inspect your dryer; a burned-out part could definitely be the cause. Also, ensure the dryer vent isn’t clogged with lint, and check the kitchen for anything that might have gotten burnt, like on the stove or in the toaster!

It's probably best to air the house out. Open up some windows and doors to let the smell escape. Then, close them and methodically check room by room to find where it's coming from. You’d be surprised how often these weird smells have a source!

Great idea! I’ll start airing it out now!

Could it possibly be a skunk that sprayed outside? That smell can sometimes resemble rubber. Just throwing that out there!
