What’s Causing This Weird Thumping Sound in My Townhouse?

Hey everyone! I just moved into a new construction townhouse, and I've been dealing with this persistent thumping noise in one of the bedrooms. It's not super loud but definitely annoying, especially when I'm trying to sleep. The thumping happens about 12-13 times a minute, but it's not at regular intervals like 'thump - 5 seconds - thump thump - 8 seconds - thump - 3 seconds' and so on. This noise is relentless, occurring at all times—2 AM, 5 AM, or 3 PM, it doesn't seem to be affected by holidays or the weather. I've looked outside and couldn't find anything visibly banging. The sound seems to be coming from one side of the room, and it's on the 2nd floor of the townhouse. Any thoughts on what this could be?

It could be a roof vent causing that noise. I had a similar issue with a valve on a roof vent, but not as frequent as yours. Does the sound have a clunky or clinky vibe to it?

There are two more floors above, and I can’t hear that sound up there. It’s definitely more of a muffled thump, not a sharp clink.

It's tough to pinpoint the issue without knowing more about what's on the other side of the wall. Is there an HVAC system you and your neighbor share? It could be related to that, as air filters getting dirty can cause clunking noises. Also, plumbing lines could make similar noises if they're shared between units. Keep an ear out to see if the noise correlates with water usage nearby!

Sorry about that noise! I guess I’ll stop hula hooping in here...it wasn’t going well anyway.

Could there be an attic fan that you aren’t aware of? If it’s central AC, I’m curious about noisy fans—especially if a neighbor has installed one. That might be something worth looking into!

I don’t have an attic, and I know there are no ceiling fans already installed. I’m wondering if the neighbor might have one, though—I hadn’t considered that possibility.

Have you checked if there’s a ceiling fan? Sometimes the blades might not be secured properly and could create knocking sounds.
