Hey everyone, I'm trying to find the right joist to hang a 12lb Tiffany style light fixture above my bedroom desk. I stumbled upon something concerning while checking; there's this ~4" wide section between the wall and ceiling fan that shows a strong electric indicator. Can I safely drill into the center of this section?

It sounds like there might be a power cable running alongside the joist. As long as you drill into the center of the joist itself, you should be fine. I’d recommend using the regular stud finder mode instead of the electric one, or you could use a magnet to find drywall screws to help locate the joist's center.

How wide are ceiling joists usually? My finder shows them as ~2" wide, and there’s a screw that’s only about 0.7" away from where I wanted to put the hook—is that right?
