What’s That Metal Box in My Kitchen Wall and Can I Remove My Old Phone Jack?

I recently noticed a metal box sticking out of the wall in my kitchen, and I'm curious about what it is, especially since we're planning to paint soon. There's also an old telephone jack there—can I remove that myself, or should I hire an electrician? Thanks in advance!

The metal box is likely an old electrical outlet box or possibly a junction box. Sometimes these boxes are just left over from previous installations. If it’s not actively in use, you can simply paint around it. However, if you want to remove it, it's best to get an electrician since electrical work can be tricky. As for the telephone jack, you can generally remove that yourself without any issues as it’s usually low voltage, but just ensure you check that it’s not connected to any active systems first.

That box is probably just a junction box—or it could be an empty switch box. If you want to take it out, be ready for some work since it could create a big hole in your wall! It's a good idea to look inside first and see what's connected. If it’s super complicated, it’d be wise to call an electrician.

You can safely remove the old telephone jack yourself since it’s not usually electrically live. Just be careful—unscrew it and patch up the wall after. For the metal box, checking for any wires inside is key. If you see anything connected, leave it be or get a pro to handle it; better safe than sorry!
