I was installing some towel racks and noticed a very sweet, almost sour smell coming from the stud after I pulled back. The wood feels way too soft, and I'm concerned about what's going on. I really hope it's not rotting wood! About a year ago, we had our AC unit in the attic leak water because the drain was clogged, and it's right in the same area where I'm drilling. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this smell and what steps I should take?

Oh man, that doesn't sound good! I've dealt with a similar issue where I had a leak in my bathroom, and it seriously wrecked the wood underneath. The sweet/sour smell and soft wood could definitely be signs of rot, especially since it's near where your AC leaked. If wood stays wet for too long, it starts breaking down and you'll get those funky smells.
You should really check it out—maybe see if you can safely take a small piece out or even just shine a flashlight in there. If it’s soft and spongy, you’ve likely got a rot situation on your hands. If you're handy, you might consider replacing it yourself, but be careful, because if it’s affecting structural parts like a 2x4, bringing in a pro might be your best bet. And yeah, you’ll definitely want to address any ongoing moisture issues to avoid bigger problems down the road!
Thanks a lot! I think I can handle it, but I’ll call in a pro if it looks structural. Gonna get someone to check it out soon!
