I'm trying to figure out which brand makes the best #4 smoothing plane. I've heard a lot of recommendations, but I'd love to get some insights on quality, price, and whether I should consider specific models or brands. What do you all think?

I have to say, my guess would also be Lie Nielsen. I personally use an old Stanley Bedrock, which is great, but I think Lie Nielsen might have them beat slightly in terms of modern features.

If you're looking for quality, Lie Nielsen is a top contender, though they can be a bit pricey at around $400. That being said, they're known for their exceptional craftsmanship right out of the box. Here's a (https://youtu.be/NxnUot2P7Kg?si=AiO56I7sybbhqTzX) that dives deeper into the topic!

I don't think I need to be more specific. Most people I've talked to have consistently recommended Lie Nielsen. Thanks for your input!

Don't overlook Veritas; they make some fantastic smoothing planes too. Also, take a look at the Clifton line—they're often underrated but perform excellently. With all the tariffs going on in the U.S., it might influence your decision, but any of these options are solid choices!

I've used a few different brands, and my Lie Nielsen 4 1/2 was ready to go straight out of the box. One standout feature is how well the sides are machined square to the sole—it’s perfect for making precise cuts. But honestly, my $30 Stanley from the 1940s performs just as well!
