What’s the Best Bandsaw and Drill Press for My Garage Shop?

I recently received a $1,000 gift card from Home Depot due to some appliance repair issues, and I want to invest in new tools for my garage shop. I'm particularly interested in getting either a bandsaw or a drill press, as I've found myself needing both for various projects. I'm considering a few options: 1) A Grizzly, Jet, or WEN 14" 1HP bandsaw for around $1,000. 2) Saving up for a better bandsaw. 3) A Grizzly 20" 1.25HP or a WEN 17" drill press for under $1,000. 4) Saving for a better drill press. 5) Or, should I just buy a $500ish bandsaw and drill press combo? I prefer floor models for power and capacity and want to find something durable that I won't have to replace anytime soon. Any recommendations?

I prefer buying used tools; you can find solid vintage models for cheap! I got a 14” bandsaw from the 80s for around $200. If space isn't an issue, having both tools is great. Maybe pick up a used option for one and splurge on the other with your gift card!

I also scored a Reliant bandsaw for $100, and it works perfectly! You don't need to worry much about the risk of buying used; many tools last forever if taken care of.

Absolutely! I got a decent drill press for $200 and a solid bandsaw from the 60s for $250. Older models often outperform new ones! You might just need to adjust or replace a few parts, but overall, they're great.

Used drill presses are pretty common and can be found for a great price. I snagged an older Delta model for $27 at an auction! For bandsaws, newer models usually have better features like guides and fences. If you're not planning to do much resawing, a 14” bandsaw should suit you just fine.

What are you planning to make with the bandsaw and drill press? Usually, it’s easier to find a good used drill press than a really solid bandsaw. Just something to keep in mind while you're deciding!

I don’t have experience with your exact options, but I'd prioritize getting a good bandsaw. A drill press is nice, but it's not necessary for most projects. A reliable bandsaw will really help expand your capabilities!
