What’s the Best Countertop Material for Durability: Quartz or Granite?

I'm looking to upgrade my laminate countertop to either quartz or granite and I'm curious about their durability. We try to be careful, but accidents happen—like dropping a knife on the countertop. If I dropped a knife (point side down), would it just bounce off, or would there be damage? I've dropped knives on my laminate before, and I'm hoping either quartz or granite could better withstand these mishaps.

Quartz is super popular because of its durability and low maintenance. It resists stains and heat better than laminate but can be less flexible if you want color matching. Granite is tougher overall but needs sealing and can chip if you don't watch the edges. So, if you're a bit clumsy with dropping things, just be aware both could get scratched if you're not careful!

Totally agree! I've got both and have chipped the edges of my granite around the sink. Just takes a slip when washing dishes! But honestly, I've been able to fix those chips easily with some epoxy.

Stone countertops like granite and quartz are generally pretty tough. Dropping a knife on granite might chip the knife more than the countertop, but the key is how lucky you get with the angle it hits. Also, if you're going for a lighter color, make sure to wipe messes up quickly to avoid stains, even though many people think they won't happen!
