What’s the best fence material for safety and privacy in a busy area?

We live on a busy street and want to keep our backyard safe for our little kids (all under 4) and our corgi. We need to put up a fence ASAP as we want to enjoy our backyard now that the snow is gone and temperatures are rising above 50 degrees. I'm unsure about fence options. I think chain link might be easy to install, but it seems unattractive and lacks privacy. I really like wooden fences for their looks but am worried about the maintenance. Vinyl could be a good option, but I've seen many that look worn out. Any advice or personal experiences on this?

I suggest getting good quality cedar from a specialized lumber yard instead of a big box store. With minimal treatment every few years, it can last 10-20 years, making it a durable choice.

Wood fences are great for privacy and have a nice aesthetic, though they do require some upkeep. Vinyl fences are low-maintenance, but can get worn over time. Chain link is easy to install but offers little privacy unless you add slats. For your kids and dog, I'd recommend choosing either wood or vinyl based on your budget and how much maintenance you’re okay handling.

I really like the look of fences that use metal posts and borders with wooden boards slotting in. They seem to last longer than wood posts and you can swap out boards when needed. Just look up 'metal and cedar fence' for inspiration. It might be pricier, though. I’m not a fan of vinyl—it's tough to repair, especially if you need to match a gate.
