I'm building a platform to elevate my couch above a baseboard heater since I can't find a better spot for it. I plan to stain the wood chocolate brown using Varathane gel stain. However, I'm concerned about heat damage. Is there a heat-resistant finish someone would recommend? I've heard about options like Waterlox and tung oil, but I'm not sure if I can stain with tung oil. Should I just get a standard finish and call it good?

If you're adding color, consider just painting the back with a heat-resistant paint where it's close to the heater, and stain only the visible sides. That could save you some hassle with finishes!
You could apply the stain first and then use an oil-based finish over it. Just make sure it's heat-resistant! Waterlox is a solid option for that. I've also heard tung oil works well, but not sure about staining with it?
I appreciate it! I've heard good things about Varathane being oil-based too, but maybe a water-based stain would be safer near the heat.
