What’s the Best First Tool for Beginners Working on Their Car?

I'm just getting started with car repairs, focusing mainly on the brakes for now but I plan to tackle suspension parts soon. I live in Canada, where many parts are rusted. I'm trying to decide on the best first tool to invest in, and I'm torn between the DCF921B compact impact wrench and the DCF891B mid-torque wrench. I'd really appreciate your recommendations and insights on what would be the best choice!

If you're just starting out, I suggest investing in a long breaker bar along with a pipe for extra leverage. For impacts, the DCF891 is a solid choice - it can handle most jobs easily. The DCF921 is good too, but the 891 has more power, especially for rusted parts, so I’d lean towards that one unless you specifically need something more compact.

While the impact wrenches are great, don't forget that you'll need a variety of hand tools too. I’d recommend a good ratchet set, a torque wrench, and even a work light. You might find that starting with hand tools is more beneficial before diving into power tools.

I own both the DCF891 and the DCF923 (which is the shorter version of the 921), and I'd recommend starting with the 891. It’s powerful for removing rusted bolts and doesn’t struggle like the 923 might. The time saved using the 891 is significant – it can take off tough bolts in just a couple of seconds!
