What’s the Best Material for DIY Cabinet Shelves?

I'm looking to replace some missing shelves in my cabinets, ideally ones that will hold a mix of linens, blankets, board games, and cards. The shelves need to be around 40 inches wide and 21 inches deep. Any suggestions on what material would work best?

Wood is a solid choice for cabinet shelves—durable and nice to look at! I'd suggest looking into plywood for strength; it's typically used for making shelves. You might also want to consider adding some extra support if you plan on putting heavier items on them by gluing a sturdier wood like maple or oak at the front. It's worked well for me without any sagging issues.

Thanks! Do you usually just sand the plywood for a smooth finish?
