What’s the best material for my bookshelf countertop?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of building some built-in bookshelves with lower cabinets and shelves on top. The cabinets I'm working with are 12 inches deep and stretch 15 feet long. I need to choose a material for the "countertop" that separates the cabinets from the shelves. I've thought about using solid wood (which I plan to stain), butcher block, or even quartz/marble if I can find some remnants. I'm looking for something budget-friendly, and it's fine if the countertop isn't one solid piece. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to check with local countertop cutting companies. They often have cutoffs they're willing to give away or sell for a really low price. You might get lucky and find a great deal on the right size!

Thanks for the suggestion! How do I find those companies? Should I just Google "countertop cutting"?
