What’s the Best Method to Join End Grains of Two Panels?

I'm working on a project where I have two panels, each around 4.5 feet long and 2 feet wide. I want to join them together to create a single panel that measures 9x2 feet. Is a half lap joint a good way to do this, or are there better options available? I'm open to suggestions! Also, I'm considering using countertop connector hardware or staggering the boards instead of connecting the two panels directly.

A half lap joint could definitely work, but it might be better to use individual boards instead of those panels. Staggering the joins would help avoid weaknesses in the glue area. They create solid furniture out of finger jointed pine, so it’s doable!

Got it, so it would be kind of like butcher block. Just with larger boards?
