I'm looking for a finish or varnish that won't yellow over time when exposed to UV light. I've been using Rust-Oleum Marine Coatings Spar Varnish Gloss for my indoor projects, and I love how well it holds up to damp conditions, especially on plant stands. However, I need something for outdoor use now, like a little free library I'm building, and I've heard that my current go-to can yellow. I live in western New York where winters can be tough, so I need a finish that can withstand the weather too. Any recommendations?

Varathane’s water-based spar urethane is a solid choice. It stays clear, is resistant to yellowing, and holds up well outdoors with UV and mildew resistance. Another option you might want to consider is TotalBoat Halcyon Clear. It’s a marine-grade finish that stays flexible and is great for outdoor conditions without turning amber, unlike some oil-based finishes.
Awesome, thanks! I’ll definitely check those out. I prefer marine finishes since I grew up around boats and know how much wear and tear they endure.
Check out General Finishes; they offer an exterior waterborne finish that's pretty reliable for outdoor use!
Thanks for the tip!
Water-based varnish sounds intriguing, definitely need to test that out!
