Hey everyone! My wife and I bought a house last year and have been tackling some DIY projects, like building an awning and an 8x8 front porch. Now, her mom's cats just had kittens, and we're planning to keep a few outside to help manage our mouse problem. The issue is we need to figure out the best way to keep them dry and out of the way. Should we add a covered 3x8 section to the front porch, or should we build a small porch under the awning by the back door? Any suggestions?

Looks like you've put a lot of thought into your setup! If you're going to build something, think about the back porch since it might offer better shelter from wind and rain. Plus, it keeps your front area neater. Just make sure it’s really secure so they can’t escape or get into trouble!
Honestly, keeping cats outdoors can be a bit tricky, especially for the local wildlife. They’re great at hunting mice, but outdoor cats can disrupt the ecosystem. If you can, consider keeping them indoors or at least provide them with safe outdoor enclosures. Just my two cents!
I get that concern, but I’m super allergic to cats! Keeping them inside isn’t an option for us, but I think they’ll be okay outside since we live in a rural area.
