What’s the Best Soil for Indoor Plants Without the Gnats?

Hey everyone! I recently discovered that the soil I bought was infested with fungus gnats, which was a total bummer. I had to toss out a huge bag of compost that I wasn't even impressed with, and now I'm on the hunt for new soil options. There are so many brands out there, and they all claim to be the best for different types of plants. I'm looking for something that works well for most houseplants and is good quality. What are some reliable brands you recommend? And what should I be looking for when choosing soil?

I swear by Fox Farm soil! I mix it with a good amount of perlite, some cactus grit, and orchid bark to make a versatile mix. It supports all kinds of plants—from calatheas to snake plants, and they all seem super happy in it. You should totally look into it!

Yeah, those big box store soils can be hit or miss, especially since they’re often stored outside. A lot of folks bake their soil to kill pests, but that can also wipe out good bacteria. Personally, I’ve had great luck with the Miracle-Gro soil from Costco. It’s not fancy, but when I mix it with perlite and some orchid bark, it works really well for my plants!

I think that’s probably what happened to me too—I got that infested bag from a garden center. I’ll definitely check out the Miracle-Gro. Thanks for the tip!
