I'm looking for advice on the best tools to use for applying water-based polyurethane to a butcher block countertop that I'm making into a desk. I've heard suggestions for synthetic bristle brushes, foam brushes, and a specific brand like Wooster's ultra soft nylon brush. I'm using General Finishes High Performance Water Based Polyurethane Topcoat on a Floor & Decor Hevea II butcher block that measures 72x36 inches. I've found that foam brushes work really well. The poly levels out nicely, so pretty much anything will do the job. Just keep an eye on the condition of the brush as you go!
Paint pads can work nicely too, but make sure you choose one that doesn't shed. It can be a pain cleaning up bristles from your finish. Just a heads-up!
For large areas like your tabletop, using a foam roller is effective for the bigger sections, but definitely keep a foam brush handy for those detailed spots. You'll want to make sure to apply several coats and sand between them for the best finish.
