What’s the Best Way to Attach a Motor to a Wood Board?

Hey everyone! I'm new to this and trying to figure out the best way to connect a motor to a wood board. I've printed a piece but I'm struggling to get the dimensions just right to fit snugly onto the little motor shaft. I'm curious about how people managed to do this before 3D printing was a thing. I've seen motor couplers, but they tend to be as expensive as the motor itself, and I'm trying to save some cash. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you're looking for a way to secure that motor shaft to the board. One option is to use set screws if that fits what you’re doing. There are lots of creative solutions! It might depend on how you plan to use the motor. Don’t forget, a solid connection can be crucial to avoid mishaps later on.

I'm actually making a small turntable! The motor is strapped to the base, but I need to connect the shaft to the top board for it to spin. I can't cut the exact shape of the motor shaft into the board. How is this usually handled?

One idea is to create a coupler using metal or plastic rod. You could also use some flexible plastic tubing that slips onto the shaft; that might give you the snug fit you're after. Just press it on and let it harden in place for a solid attachment!

So, the tubing is flexible when I push it on, then it hardens right? That sounds like it could work!
