What’s the Best Way to Block Heat from High Ceiling Windows?

Hey everyone! I live in San Diego, and my living room has become a sauna thanks to the blazing sun. Here's the deal:
• My ceilings are around 18 ft high.
• The lower half of my windows (about 9 ft) have blinds, but the upper half is wide open and letting in all that heat.

I'm looking for affordable ways to block the heat from those high windows. I know curtains are tricky because of the height, and I don't want to break the bank with motorized tracks. Any ideas or suggestions for low-cost solutions to keep my place cooler? Thanks!

You might want to look into solar screens or an outdoor shade sail; both can help reduce heat without needing to spend a fortune. Also, there are battery-operated curtain controls if you decide to go that route! Depending on the window setup, you could even find inexpensive blinds at a home improvement store and have them cut down to size.

I’d say consider just putting up permanent blinds, but if you’re renting, it might be tricky. A local quote I got was over $500, which defeats the purpose of saving on bills! I'd chat with your landlord about fixing that heat issue rather than rigging something up yourself.

I totally hear you! I mentioned my rental situation to my landlord, but it feels like a constant battle to get things sorted out. I just want something that works without breaking the bank!

If you’re really looking to keep costs down, some people suggest using garbage bags or cardboard as a temporary solution. But, if you want something better than that, try window tinting—it’s pretty cool and effective!
