I need to figure out how to cut some fairly large tree branches to size for disposal. They have a diameter of over 3 inches, and I don't want to spend money on a wood chipper right now. Plus, my area doesn't allow burning them. My trash service will take the branches, but they need to be trimmed down to a specific size. I was considering using an axe, but that might be hard without a stable stump. A hand saw is another option, but I'm worried it might be too labor-intensive. What do you all think is the easiest way to handle this?

If you’re dealing with 3" branches, a bow saw could work well too, or you could go for a battery-powered chainsaw. Both are effective and manageable!
An electric chainsaw is pretty ideal for this kind of job, and corded versions are usually inexpensive. Just remember to get some bar oil for it too!
Honestly, a saw is definitely the way to go! A manual hand saw might take some time, but it gets the job done if you're up for it. Just take your time.
No need to be rude! The OP just wanted some input on the best way to tackle this while saving time and effort.
If you have any battery-powered tools, check if your manufacturer has a chainsaw option. They're really fantastic for this kind of job, especially for sizing down branches!
I actually used a 12v Sawzall with a wood blade while camping recently to cut some logs for a fire, and it worked pretty well!
Is it okay to just cut them right on the ground, or do I need some kind of stabilizer for safety?

Seems pretty obvious, huh? But hey, I get that you want to make sure you have the most efficient method before diving in.
