Hey everyone! I'm new to gardening and need some help. I recently had new grass laid, and after dealing with a heatwave and low water pressure, it's looking decent despite a few bald patches. Since we don't have a lawnmower and won't be buying one anytime soon due to budget constraints, I have a strimmer instead. I'm looking for advice on a couple of things:
1) How can I use this strimmer to cut the grass evenly without it going all over the place? I have a hard time keeping it steady.
2) When I cut the grass, the underlayer looks yellow or brown. Could this be because it's too thick or not getting enough sunlight? Any tips would really help. Thanks!

If you are looking into alternatives, have you thought about buying a second-hand mower? Tons of people sell them on Facebook Marketplace or eBay for really cheap. I picked up mine for only £10! If you're patient, you might find an even better deal and it’ll save you a ton of hassle!
If you can, check if there’s a borrowing library in your area where you can rent tools. Some towns have places where you can borrow mowers or strimmers for free. Also, if you can form a deal with your neighbors—like offering to mow their lawn in exchange for borrowing a mower—that could work out well!
That’s a great idea! I’ll look into it.
Using a strap for your strimmer can really help keep it steady at the right height. That way, you'll avoid cutting too much off at once. Also, remember to only trim about one-third of the grass length at a time. If the grass looks brown underneath, it might be getting stressed from being cut too short or not enough water. Make sure to keep an eye on watering, especially during hot days!
Thanks for the tip! I definitely need to work on my technique.

Awesome advice! I’ll definitely check those out.
