What’s the Best Way to Cut Playhouse Posts Evenly?

I recently set up four 4x4x8 posts for a playhouse, aiming to raise the structure about 4 feet off the ground. However, the ground is uneven at the four post locations, and I'm unsure how to ensure that all the posts are cut to the same height without ending up with an uneven floor. What's the best method to accurately cut these posts so that they're all level?

If you can’t get a level between the posts, a water level works wonders. Just fill a clear hose with water and hold it between two posts. Wherever the water level sits, that’s where you need to cut! It’s surprisingly accurate and works great over longer distances, plus it's a cheaper solution than most laser levels.

That’s a neat trick! I never thought of using a water level but it makes sense!

Using a laser level is definitely one of the best options for this! You can also string a board between the posts to create a level line that’ll help you mark where to cut. If you have a long enough board, that’s super helpful too! Just make sure to double-check everything before cutting to avoid any slips!

Cool, I have a laser level but I've only used it once. Glad to know I can rely on it, thanks!

Another great method is to dig down at least 3 feet for stability and then use a taut line (string) to ensure all posts are at the same height. Just anchor it to one post, pull it tight to others, and adjust until level. Once you have the level line, mark the posts and cut them down to size. It’s foolproof and gives a solid base.
