I have a large hole in my backyard where a pool used to be, and it's about 4 inches deep. I'm planning to fill it in to level the ground, and I'm considering using topsoil. Is topsoil the right choice for such a big area, or should I look into other options?

You might want to check with your local landscape supply yard for the best materials based on your situation. They usually have great recommendations! In my area, we often use something called screened loam for filling in areas like this.
When you fill the hole, remember to build it up a bit higher than level since it’ll settle later. Compacting in layers is super important too—fill it in about 2 inches at a time and tamp it down. Finally, top it off with screened topsoil to finish it off for grass or other plants.
Topsoil should work, but adding some sand can help prevent settling since sand doesn’t break down like topsoil. This can really keep the level consistent over time!
