What’s the best way to finish the edges of a plywood shelf?

I'm working on a pretty big toy shelf for my son's room—it's going to be 8 feet long and designed with a French cleat so he can easily store his larger toys underneath. I was planning to use walnut plywood, but I'm unsure about how to finish the edges. Should I go with edge banding, or would it be easier to rip some thin strips of hardwood and frame the edges instead?

I’d go for a face frame with real walnut. It gives a nice finished look and feels sturdier overall.

I really like that idea! How thin do you think the strips should be for framing?

Either option can work well! Just keep in mind that trimming banding can be a bit of a hassle. If you decide to use thin hardwood strips, I recommend picking up some bandy clamps from Rockler to hold everything in place while the glue dries. You can also use pin nails as an extra measure.
