What’s the best way to fix a broken garage door opener casing?

Today I discovered that the casing of my garage door opener is just hanging by the wires. It seems the plastic piece that held the screws broke off, and now it's just dangling. This garage door opener is pretty old, and I think it finally gave way due to wear. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? I'm open to quick solutions since I'm not very handy. For instance, could I use a bungee cord to hold it up? I'm a bit anxious about dealing with electrical parts, so any advice would be appreciated.

You could try using a 2-part plastic epoxy to glue the broken piece back together. If you're feeling adventurous, UV curing glue might be a fun option! Just make sure to get the surface nice and clean before applying it for the best hold.

Thanks for the tip! Just to clarify, is it safe to put some pressure on the opener while the glue sets?

The best approach would be to unscrew the whole unit and, if possible, disconnect the wires for the lights. This way, you can clamp the broken piece properly while the glue sets. If clamps aren’t an option, try to weigh it down gently so it doesn’t hang by the wires. Works much better than having to hold it up!

Haha, yeah, that makes much more sense than holding it up! Thanks for the detailed advice!

You could drill a few holes in the top edge of the plastic that align with the holes in the metal plate, and then use zip ties to secure it. It’s a quick fix that should hold it in place well!

If it's not too complicated, just try pushing it back up and see if it snaps into place. Look for clips along the sides of the metal frame which should hold it securely. If this works, you can always add some small screws in a few spots for extra stability.

Sounds good, I’ll give that a shot!
